Address: village Giurgeni, commune Valea Ursului, Neamt County
The Patron of the monastery: “The Birth of St Mary, the Mother of Jesus” celebrated on 8 September

Year of construction: built in 1783 by the monk Ghedeon on top of an old religious settlement, rebuilt in the XIX century

The religious settlement from Giurgeni was first mentioned in the beginning of the XVIII century as a hermitage built in 1721 by few Greek monks. In the XIX century the hermitage will start hosting nuns and later on it will become a monastery. Between 1833 and 1849, the buildings were rebuilt from stone. At that time the most precious objects that the hermitage had were two icons, one made by Nectarie, from 1796 and another one from 1831 dressed in silver by Cloroiescu.

The present day church was built in 1833. From an architectural stand of point the church was built from bricks on a stone foundation. The church has three bells of different sizes, where the big one weights 170 kg and was made in 1820. In 1928 the church was rebuilt and functioned as a monastery until 1959 when it was closed by the communist party. Only the church was spared from demolition.

The monastery was left alone and to the merci of time until 1989, when once with the communist party fall the monastery was reopened. From that year the monastery is attended by monks. Starting with the year 1995 the church was repaired and few other buildings were built so that the religious settlement to have all that is needed for its peaceful life.

Today, the Monastery from Giurgeni is known among believers as a place of prayer where there is a special icon that is belief to perform miracles. The icon is placed inside the church of the monastery and it’s a portrait of Mother Mary with two mouths and three eyes. This icon is dressed in pure silver and it represents a gift to the monastery (1831). The unusual visual characteristics of the icon (the second mouth and the third eye) they say it appear over night as a sign from God. Believers come to the monastery from all over the country and pray for their sins. Once every two weeks, in the night between Thursday and Friday the church is filled with believers that come to attend the religious service called “Sfatul Maslu”.
