The people responsible for opening this museum are professors Daniel Calu, Dumitrina Iosub, Cristina Marcoci and Dumitru Balacianu that have managed to create a collection of objects that represent our traditions, our customs and the history of people living in these parts.

Although at first the objects from the collection were exposed in a corner of a room and then on the hallway of the school, in time the number of objects grew so it was necessary that the collection to be exhibited in its own room. Here the tourist can admire treasures from the past of this community.

This museum is also the place where children and young people from Borca commune can witness traditions and customs of our ancestors, things that we should never forget.

The objects exposed in the museum are characteristic to this region. Among it you’ll see weaves, traditional clothing elements, traditional furniture pieces, clothes that people were at the daily jobs or at weddings, objects made out of wood used inside houses on a daily basis, ceramics and carpets.

The Ethnography Museum from Borca commune, Neamt County is a place where time stands still, where true values of Romanian people wait for us to visit and treasure.

Neamt Monastery, the oldest monastery from Neamt County, hosts a very important religious collection both for the religious culture and art as well for the national culture.

The museum displays cult objects made out of precious metal, embroideries, fabrics, wood sculptures all made by the monks from the monastery or that were received as gifts over time from different rules. All these objects contain important historical information about our past and our traditions.

Because of its wealth, Neamt Monastery was a target of many attacks. Despite the odds, the monastery survived and remained an important center of medieval culture that keeps in its museum an important part of our National Cultural Heritage.

The oldest manuscripts exhibited in the museum are dated to the time of ruler Alexandru cel Bun (1400 – 1432). The objects from the museum can be classified in more categories: manuscripts and printings, paintings, sculptures, religious objects made out of silver or silver covered with gold, clay objects, wood and metal engravings, robes and objects used in different religious services, covers for the Holly Vessels, bells and seals.

In the museum of Neamt Monastery you can also see the oldest art object of religious sculpture from Moldova: the iconostasis from the church from Neamt Stronghold, which has paintings dated to XV century. Here are some other valuable objects that you can see in the museum of Neamt Monastery: a filigree panaghiar from 1750 (panaghiar – is a holy vessel that holds a small icon that has the face of St Mary painted on it), a replica of the Holy Grail received as a gift in 1748 from the daughter of Tar Petru, the Slavonic Evangelic from 1759 that weights 35 kg, a Holy Cup from 1767, an epitrahil from 1470 and a box with Holy relics (the Head of St Simeon).

This entire collection of religious objects is just a small portion of what Neamt Monastery had and still represents an important place that illustrates the cultural and historical role that this monastery played over time.

The collection of religious objects from Secu Monastery was also appreciated by historian Nicolae Iorga that describes it like “the great wonder of Secu”. Here are some of the valuable objects displayed in the monastery’s museum:

“The Air” (“The holy Epitaph”) that was a gift received by the monastery in 1608. On the red velvet background you see the scene “Crying for Jesus”, worked in gold thread and framed by a Slavonic inscription.

You can also see a series of Gospel Books among which there is a manuscript in Slavic that dates from XIV – XV centuries. A true masterpiece of religious and artistic importance is the Gospel printed in 1821, when the abbot of Secu Monastery was Ilarie. This Gospel was printed at Neamt Monastery and has frames with faces of saints painted on all the pages by the monk Ghervasie from Neamt. Another important gospel is the Holy Gospel printed in 1763 at Moscow, in the Slavic language. This gospel has silver covers and was donated to the monastery by Ecaterina the 2nd, tar of Russia.

In the year 1842, Safta Brancoveanu donates to Secu Monastery two chests made out of silver covered in gold and each with 5 towers covered in brilliants.

Together with these special pieces you can also see: two crosses from 1592 and 1607 covered with silver, two censer made out of silver covered with gold from XVII century, two big silver candlesticks from 1602 and so on.

Over time Secu Monastery played an important role in promoting the local culture and the religious life from Neamt County and basically from all over Romania.

What makes this collection different from the ones from Agapia Monastery and Neamt Monastery is that here you’ll see objects not only from Varatec Monastery but also from other monasteries as well: sculptures, embroideries, old fabrics, icons, crosses, clothes and ornaments.

The Religious Collection from Varatec Monastery hosts some of the oldest wood painted icons, from XV century that pictures St Nicolae or Archangels Mihail and Gavril brought from Rasca Monastery – Falticeni. From XVI century there is an icon with St Maria with Jesus, brought from Valeni, painted on wood in the byzantine style. You can also see a series of small icons from XVII century and the icon “Maica Domnului Dolorosa” (“Mother of God Dolorosa”) painted by Eftimie. From Topolita Hermitage there some icons with Jesus and St Maria painted by ieromonahul Tiufan (ieromonah is a religious title that refers to a monk that is also a priest) in 1697.

Truly impressive are also other icons of St Maria and Jesus that are present in the religious collection from Varatec Monastery and that dates from 1661, 1179 and 1859. The icon from 1859 was painted by Nicolae Grigorescu and displays St Maria with baby Jesus together with angels.

The museum is impressive with its multitude of religious objects: wooden sculpted crosses, discs, chalices, candlesticks and more. One of the most important items is Evanghelia (The Gospel) printed in 1821 by Veniamin Costache at Neamt Monastery and the Greek Evangheliar printed in Venice in 1811.

Come visit the museum from Varatec Monastery, in Neamt County and enjoy a journey into our history and witness the beauty of handmade objects like crosses, icons or carpets.
