Short description

The folk craftsman Vasile Gaman was born on 20 January 1936 in the village Lunca. He learned at the School for Craftsmanship from Targu Neamt. Elder Vasile, how villagers like to call him, is well known in the entire country for his wooden sculptures. In his career that stretches over 40 years he dedicated himself to perfecting his skills of wood sculpture and to his collection of old tools, books, old icons, folk costumes, traditional masks, medals, coins.

The passion for folk art and the respect for the national history were very important for Vasile Gaman. In the year 1979 this passion will material itself in the form of a personal museum, located in Lunca from the village Vanatori.

The building of the museum is a traditional house and the permanent collection that is exposed here covers about 3,000 pieces collected or built over time. The entrance gate from the museum is a national monument and it has sculpted in wood the faces of Burebista, Decebal, Traian, Stefan the Great, Dragos-Voda and Mihai Viteazul on the map of Romania. The gate is flanked with the weapons that defended the gate.

The objects exposed in this collection are valuable: manuscripts, medals, wood painted icons, traditional masks, and ceramics. By working with passion the sculptor Vasile Gaman managed to ornate over 50 churches among which: Agapia, Horaita, Tisa, The Heroes Cathedral from Targoviste, churches from Bacau, Hunedoara and Oradea. Vasile Gaman is also a teacher of the Folk Art School from Piatra Neamt and a member of the Traditional Art Academy from Romania.

During her life, Veronica Micle, came to live in this house many times. Towards the end of her life she will live at the monastery Varatec and she donates the house in 1886 to the monastery with the condition that on the external wall of the house to be placed a stone inscription that would say: The House of Veronica Micle. Here will stay the nuns that would come to Targu Neamt for hospitalization.

After the house had few owners, at an initiative from Constantin Matasa, the house becomes a national monument. Since 1982 the house is administrated by The Society of Museums Neamt, it is restored and hosts the memorial house of Veronica Micle. The museum is open for the public since 1984 and in 1998 the sculptor Popa Damian-Ioan creates a sculpture made out of bronze representing Veronica Micle.

The permanent exhibition of the museum is dedicated to the life and literal activity of Veronica Micle, which is as we know the inspiration muse of our greatest national poet Mihai Eminescu. When we leave the museum we can see the “Alley of poplars” presented in the love lyrics of the poet Mihai Eminescu.

The exhibition of the museum still maintains the atmosphere of that period, furniture pieces, the piano, the samurai sword, an ivory chess, documents, personal belongings, photos, the portraits of both parents of the writer, historical documents from 1500, the library with all the books of Mihail Sadoveanu (75 volumes) and a few first editions (61).

The museum was founded with the support of the Sadoveanu family and it combines the sentimental value with the historical work of Sadoveanu.

In the year 1940 there was the first exhibition with objects found by professors Ilie Minea and Dumitru Constantinescu, following the archeological excavations in the area of the Neamt Stronghold (Cetatea Neamtului). The museum is founded in 1957 when was also celebrated 500 years since Stefan the Great was crowned. In time the museum had many locations but from 1978 it was moved in the building where we can find it today.

The building of the history museum from Targu Neamt is an architectural monument and it was built between 1852 and 1853. Initially here was the Royal School and it was the place where the greatest storyteller from Romania learned, Ion Creanga and also Vasile Conta. The permanent exhibition lists objects found as a result of the excavations made between 1939 and 1963.

The today’s organizational form of the exhibition was established in 1986-1987 when the main exhibition of the museum was completely reorganized. Here we can find a summary of the medieval history of the town Targu Neamt as well of the handcrafts from the Neamt area. In a court of the museum we can see some traditional machines for the processing of fruits, seeds, wood and wool.
