Religious settlements from Ceahlau Mountain

The beauty of this holy mountain, the diversity of the scenery and flora makes Ceahlau one of the most visited mountains in the country. This place offers not only great hiking opportunities but also the chance of visiting some interesting religious settlements.

The Monastery from the top of Ceahlau Mountain was built in 1993 in memory of all those monks and nuns that lived and prayed on this mountain for hundreds of years. The monastery is located near Dochia chalet. The church is made of wood in the shape of a cross. The building was made with the help of the people from Ceahlau commune and the surrounding settlements.

Durau Monastery is located in Durau Resort at the foot of Ceahlau Mountain and 5 km to Duruitoarea Waterfall. The monastery is built on the place where once was a hermitage of nuns built in the XVII century by the daughters of Vasile Lupu. The church from today was built in 1830 by monks from Neamt Monastery and Secu. The interior painting was made in 1935 by Nicolae Tonitza and his apprentices.

Cerebuc Hermitage is inhabited by monks and is administrated by the monastery from Ceahlau Mountain. The hermitage is located in Cerebuc plane, a place of rare beauty. The church is made of wood. The interior walls are covered by a realistic painting and the iconostasis is made of sculpted oak wood.
