Gateway to Ceahlău Massif, characterized by an accelerated development of recreational activities in recent years, and accessible by a picturesque road crossing Ceahlău National Park, Durău Resort in Neamț County was recently included in “Top 10 Tourist Destinations”, a project launched last year by FIJET Romania – Tourism Press Club.

Not so widely known by Romanian tourists, though always surprising to foreign visitors, Durău Resort justly deserves its place in the ranking, due to its many tourist attractions and nature wonders that will become even more visible and accessible from now on, thanks to the promotion activity of the national branches of FIJET World.

The members of FIJET Romania – Tourism Press Club set the intention of annually selecting and promoting 10 tourist destinations in the country where people are making visible progress. To put it in other words, things are done and done well, so that everybody is pleased with the final results: visitors, locals and investors. One such destination is Durău Resort which was highly voted and included among the best destinations in Romania, because of everything it currently offers to tourists. The aim is that all these wonderful locations in Romania could benefit of more promotion and, as such, be more and more flooded with tourists during the weekends, and holidays of 2023.

Ceahlău National Park Administration Centre and Mountain Rescue Service, both based in Durău Resort, and both subordinated to Neamț County Council, carried out intense activities during the past year, because of the increased number of visitors. Approximately 72,600 people paid for access tickets on the territory of the national park. 41,700 persons arrived in Durău Resort and climbed the mountain from up here. Another 15,629 visitors used Izvorul Muntelui as an access point and 14,986 visitors chose the hiking route starting from the point where rivers Bistra Mare and Bistra Mică meet.

The area displays other two attractions, extremely appreciated by the tourists: the stairs towards Toaca Peak and the Axial road, the most attractive but also the shortest route that connects Izvorul Muntelui and Durău Resort, a county road rehabilitated and modernized in August 2021, after more than 20 years of traffic restrictions to the public. Both investment projects of bringing these attractions back to the public were initiated and integrally financed by Neamț County Council.

The stairs have a leading role in preventing possible accidents and, at the same time, helping tourists gain an easier access towards the highest points of Ceahlău Massif. The stairs became available to the tourists in the autumn of 2018, after approximately two years of intensive work. The stairs consists of a metallic structure on wooden beams and resin grills.

The building materials were brought by helicopter close to the Meteo Chalet and then carried by the workers to the mountain top. It is the only mountain staircase in Romania to be built at such a high altitude and therefore, the tourists can enjoy a spectacular bird’s eye view over the horizon, soaking landscapes of a beauty that cannot be put into words:

In addition to Durău Resort, among the destinations included in Top 10 are: Fundata from Brașov County, Bucovina, the Danube Delta, Sulina, Gura Portiței, Ţara Hațegului, Sturdza Complex, Miclăușeni, Șinca Veche and Ţara Moților.

The awarding ceremony of Top 10 destinations in Romania was organized during the FIJET Romania Gala, an event which was part of the Romanian Tourism Fair in Bucharest  (February 23-26, 2023). The awards were given by the initiators of the project, the Tourism Press Club – FIJET Romania.
