“Yet Aliman’s story remained alive, forever supple and changing. Year after year, it grows richer, adorned with new tales and inventions born from people’s imagination…” wrote Vasile Voiculescu in Lostrița, imagining River Bistrița as a place where legends never truly come to an end. They travel upstream with the carriers, drift downstream with the raftsmen, pause beside children and then set off once again, carried by the water that never ceases to flow.

This is one of the most beautiful ways to discover Neamț: not simply by tracing its rivers and lakes on a map, but by allowing yourself to be carried away by their stories.

In Neamț, water is never merely water. It is a road, a refuge, a playground, a mirror for the mountains and a source of legends. Sometimes quiet, sometimes wild; sometimes hiding swans among the reeds, sometimes calling kayaks onto the shimmering surface of a lake, sometimes whispering tales of enchanted fish and raftsmen who once travelled downstream towards the valley.

Lake Bâtca Doamnei – a refuge close to the city

Few people imagine that one of the most beautiful encounters with nature can begin just a few minutes from the centre of Piatra-Neamț. Here, Lake Bâtca Doamnei changes the rhythm of the city.

In the morning, mist settles over the water. Towards evening, the light descends over high hills, and swans appear almost silently on the lake. In recent years, they have become true symbols of the lakes of Neamț. They return season after season, choosing quiet bays and gradually becoming a familiar and elegant presence. They are wild birds, yet they seem to have embraced their coexistence with the city, turning every walk along the shore into a small natural spectacle.

On the lakeshore, the Municipal Swimming Complex is no longer merely a place associated with childhood summers. It is also the starting point for a different way of exploring the water.

This is where one of the city’s most beautiful recent stories began: La Caiace. Born from a passion for sport and nature, the project has changed the way people see the lake – not simply as a beautiful backdrop, but as a living space where you can paddle in the quiet of the morning, discover hidden bays or see the city from a perspective few people know. Over time, a community has grown around the kayaks: mornings on the water, sunrise paddles, summer evenings, lessons for children, sporting events and outdoor activities have brought people closer to the lake.

Further along the road towards the village of Agârcia, Dante Lounge has become one of the most elegant places from which to watch the sunset, with an open panorama over the water and mountains. Its peaceful atmosphere and lakeside setting can turn a simple coffee or dinner into a contemplative experience, while sunset transforms the surface of the lake into a spectacle that seems almost painted.

The water is no longer simply something to look at. It is something to experience. And if you are lucky enough to head out on a SUP, a pedal boat or even a dragon boat, especially at sunrise or sunset, with swans gliding undisturbed across the water, you will understand why so many people keep coming back.

One day circular hike among the waters

If you would like to spend an entire day immersed in nature, there is a lesser-known but spectacular route combining lakeside landscapes with the villages along River Bistrița. From Piatra-Neamț, take the DN15 towards Bicaz and, in the village of Bistrița, turn left towards the shore of Lake Bâtca Doamnei. The road takes you into a peaceful area, towards a strip of land stretching into the middle of the lake, which can be reached by crossing the water through a very shallow section. The journey continues across the concrete footbridge connecting the area with Agârcia village, from where the route returns towards Piatra-Neamț along the road winding above Lake Bâtca Doamnei, eventually descending near the Municipal Swimming Complex.

The story travels along River Bistrița

At Agârcia and along the water channel, small natural beaches, quiet bays and places to stop open up along the river, where fishermen spend their mornings and families discover a different kind of holiday – one without hurry.

Beyond the lake, the Bistrița begins to flow through the forests. It is the same river that inspired Vasile Voiculescu’s legend of  Lostrița, the enchanted fish that draws people into a world where the boundary between reality and myth disappears. It is no coincidence that such a legend was born here.

The Bistrița Valley has something that invites storytelling. Every bend in the river seems to conceal an episode, every rock carries the memory of the raftsmen who once carried timber downstream, and every village has its own version of a story that no one can ever tell quite the same way. The water carries the stories onward.

Lake Vaduri and Lake Pângărați – kingdoms of silence

A little further upstream, the Bistrița slows down. It becomes two immense mirrors. The lakes of Vaduri and Pângărați are a paradise for migratory birds. Swans, cormorants and wild ducks find refuge here, while for photographers and birdwatchers, every season brings a different landscape.

Tarcău – the river that roars to the mountains

One of the Bistrița’s most spectacular tributaries is the Tarcău. Locals proudly say that it is the only stream that flows backwards. Here, the water has a different voice. It rushes between enormous boulders, forms natural rock slabs perfect for sunbathing on hot summer days, and creates some of the most picturesque leisure spots in the county.

In summer, locals and visitors come down to the riverbanks for a refreshing  swim or a few peaceful hours in nature. Children build little dams from stones, while the more adventurous set off on trails towards Brateș and Bâtca Răchitei, where panoramic views over the Tarcău Valley reward every step. There is no hurry here. The water and the forest seem to speak the same language.

The Via Mariae pilgrimage route also passes nearby, while the guesthouses in the area offer a welcoming refuge for those seeking the quiet of the mountains.

The sea between the mountains

And then, River Bistrița radically changes. The sea appears. Not a saltwater sea, but a mountain sea. Lake Izvorul Muntelui impresses not only through its size, but through its majesty and elegance. Few places in Romania can captivate so completely, so quickly. Ceahlău Massif proudly rises above the water, bays disappear among the forests, and every change in light redraws the landscape.

Seen from Bicaz harbour or from the floating terrace, the lake evokes the atmosphere of the alpine lakes of northern Italy. You can board the boat for a cruise, or choose a kayak, SUP, motorboat or rowing boat and discover the lake at your own pace.

But the beauty of the lake does not come only from its vastness. It comes from the stories it has gathered.

The Bistrița Valley is one of the great axes of legend in Moldova. For centuries, people have spoken of enchanted waters, unusual fish, outlaws, raftsmen and spirits of the mountains. Perhaps that is why, when you look at the lake from the deck of a boat, from a kayak or from the shores of Bicaz, you have the feeling that beyond the beauty of the landscape there is still something unseen – a thread of legend continuing to float above the waters.

After discovering some of Neamț’s aquatic wonders, you will understand that this journey cannot be compressed into a simple day trip. Every lake, river, waterfall and spring has its own rhythm, its own light and its own story, and their true beauty reveals itself only to those who allow themselves the time to experience them. From the almost otherworldly stillness of Lake Cuejdel to the impressive water mirror of Lake Izvorul Muntelui, from Duruitoarea Waterfall hidden in the Ceahlău Massif to the gorges and springs that give life to the mountains, the aquatic universe of Neamț is a collection of experiences meant to be discovered slowly.

That is why Neamț is not a destination for a hurried stop. It is a place where you should stay for several days, return in different seasons and allow each body of water to tell you, slowly and gently, its own story. Because here, you do not simply visit lakes and rivers. You discover an entire universe of water – one that cannot possibly be experienced in a single day.

And perhaps this is the true magic of Neamț: every body of water tells a story. And when you leave, you take all those stories with you – and carry them onward.

In the footsteps of the raftsmen

Long before tourists discovered the beauty of the Bistrița Valley, the river was one of the most important transportation routes in Moldavia. In spring, when the waters rose, rafts loaded with timber travelled down from Dorna and Broșteni, passing through Borca, Farcașa, Poiana Teiului and Bicaz, continuing towards Piatra-Neamț and further on, as far as Bacău and the Siret. The raftsmen were the people who knew every bend of the river. They knew where the water concealed whirlpools, where the rocks came dangerously close and where River Bistrița became as calm as a lake. Their craft demanded courage, skill and complete trust in the water. In the evening, after an entire day on the river, stories began to flow just as naturally as the river itself.

Today, rafts no longer travel down River Bistrița. In their place, kayaks, SUP boards and boats glide slowly across the water. But if you closely watch the river on a quiet morning, it is easy to imagine that somewhere among the mist, the voices of the raftsmen can still be heard.
