Pilgrimage on Ceahlau Mountain

21 August 2011 No Comment

pilgrims-on-ceahlauSaturday, August 6 2011, pilgrims from all over the country are expected to come on Ceahlau Mountain to participate at the religious service that will be held at the monastery from the top of the mountain. According to tradition at the religious service will participate high priests of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Over time around Ceahlau Mountain there were many small hermitages and caves used by monks and nuns that lived and prayed in difficult conditions. Many of these religious settlements were destroyed by fires, avalanches or stone falls.

The monastery from Ceahlau Mountain was built in memory of all these monks and nuns. The church of the monastery was built with the help of the people from Ceahlau commune and the surrounding villages and with the blessing of Father Daniel, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. The first religious service was held in 1993.

Following the footsteps of the monks that lived here, every year on August the6, Orthodox believers from all over the country come here to take the few km road that takes them to the monastery. The rite tries to recreate the moment when Jesus changed his face in front of the three apostles on the top of a mountain.
