15 March 2012 No Comment

05-martisor-celebration-2012The celebration of martisor represents for people in Neamt County a 2000 years old tradition. Together with this symbol of spring people also offer spring flowers like snowdrops.

Martisor is a small ornament tied with a white and red string that appears in Romanian tradition. The red signifies the love for everything that is beautiful and white represents the health and purity of the snowdrop, the first flower of spring. Women and girls receive this symbol of spring, martisor and wear it the entire March month.

Although there are numerous traditions related to martisor this item is considered to be a good fortune sign and a protector. That is why every year, on March 1st we offer a martisor to persons dear to us.

At the end of the month there is also the tradition for this item to be tied to a tree as a sign of good fortune for the year that comes.
