Memorial House

The house, located at the old heart of the town of Târgu-Neamţ, was built in wood and brick by the Neamţ Monastery in 1834, in the most authentic Romanian style, intended to be a school or a hostel. The house was bought in 1850 by the poet’s mother, a recent refugee from Transylvania (the Năsăud area) due to the Hungarian authorities’ persecution. The house – with three rooms viewing on the street, a basement, stables, a well, and an orchard – was given to Veronica as dowry upon her marriage with Ştefan Micle, a teacher, in 1864. Seven years after her husband’s demise (1879), she would donate it to Văratec Convent, where she had withdrawn from society for some time.

The condition imposed in the donation – to affix a plaque on the façade that would honour her name – was observed as late as 1918, when the poet Gorge Coşbuc, the great historian Nicolae Iorga and a group from Năsăud organised the festivity of unveiling this commemorative plaque. In 1982, the building entered under the administration of the County Museum Complex, which restored and opened it to visitors.
