zimbri-eliberati-in-libertate-2012Thursday, on March 22, 2012 was the first day of freedom for 5 bisons in Chitele area from Cracaoani commune. The event was organized by “Dragos Voda” Bisons and Carpathian Fauna Reserve during a unique project in Romania that has as primary objective to improve the conservation of the bisons in Vanatori-Neamt Nature Park from Neamt County. The project is financed by the European Fund for Regional Development.

Bisons are a legendary species in Neamt County and now they’re back in the wilderness. The first group of animals was freed by the administration of Vanatori-Neamt Nature Park from Neamt County in front of journalists and local authorities. The animals stepped with caution in their new environment and after a while slowly disappeared into the forest.

The event was a premiere for Romania and a proud reason for Neamt County, being the first place where this kind of thing is happening. In our country the last mention of a free bisons dates from 1852 in Maramures Mountains. Today this specie is saved from extension and in total there are 4400 exemplars in the world, most of them into captivity.

In the future there will be more animals left to live in the wild. The persons that witness the event made a journey into the past, 160 years ago, when this animal was free to wonder the forests of Neamt County.
