Walking the trails of Bârnadu Mountain Village

30 September 2022 No Comment

After passing through the steep cliffs of Bicaz Gorges, one can embark on a lovely walk in Bârnadu village that lies on the hilly summit that separates Şugău and Bardos rivers basins. The households are mostly made of wood, covered with shingles and strictly following the traditional architecture of the mountain villages in the rural area of Moldavia.

Bârnadu displays wide open fields, pierced here and there by wooden fences, with cows and sheep slowly grazing. It is such a peaceful and beautiful village, where the views are spectacular and where you can meet old shepherds, wizzards of the mountains, who know everything about the sheepfolds, and who impeccably master the rhythms of the seasons.

Located right above the giant stone walls of Bicaz Gorges, Bârnadu is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque mountain villages in Neamț, where houses are scattered as if they’ve been sown by an unseen hand over the hills and mountains slopes, in a huge puzzle of gardens, orchards, hayfields and pastures, linked together by a bundle of trails and cart roads.

The road towards the village departs from Bicaz-Chei commune. Right when leaving Bicaz-Chei and heading towards Lacul Roșu (Red Lake), on the right side of the road there is a sign announcing that there are 8 km left to Lapoș Valley and 6 km to Bârnadu. This road forks after 4 km and tourists can choose among various trails, each displaying views of exquisite beauty over Șugău Gorges, Criminişu Peak and Hăşmaşul Mare Peak.
