A Natural Park in Neamț — An Endless Story

26 May 2026 No Comment

One of the richest and most complex territories in Romania, stretching across an area of 30,000 hectares, is Vânători-Neamț Natural Park.

The Living Treasure of Neamț

Since the spring of 2012, when European bison were reintroduced into the forests of Vânători-Neamț Natural Park, the microregion has embarked on a path of development and recognition through the involvement of the community, local authorities, and many others.

Here, in the Land of the Bison — which overlaps with the area of Vânători-Neamț Natural Park — people have created united communities and shaped storybook-like realities, transforming the destination into a dreamland.

With every initiative, action, and event, the region has grown stronger and more emblematic, becoming a benchmark and model of excellence in ecotourism, the only destination in the country to rise, beginning in 2017, to the highest level of the Top 100 Sustainable Destinations worldwide.

But what is so special about this area, which has also earned the title of “the greenest destination” in Romania, maintaining its place in recent years among the world’s most sustainable destinations?

The answer is simple: this fabulous combination of ancient forests, medieval history, living spirituality, wild fauna, and gastronomy that preserves recipes passed down through generations. It is a rare blend that cannot be found anywhere else in the country to such an extent, giving the place a unique harmony and aura.

We invite you to watch — and even more, to truly “savor” — the documentary created by Cronicari Digitali, which journeys through this fairytale land in its entirety and captures in an absolutely enchanting way “The Sounds of Vânători-Neamț Natural Park.” Here, wherever you go and whatever you do, the voice of grand nature gently accompanies and enchants you throughout a journey that is always unforgettable.

“From the gilded iconostases of the monasteries of Agapia, Văratec, Neamț, and Sihăstria, to the walls of Neamț Fortress that have stood strong for 700 years. From Saint Theodora’s cave hidden in the mountains, to the ancient forest where the black woodpecker carves beech trunks. From folk craftsmen who keep local traditions alive, to the authentic flavors of a mountain cuisine found nowhere else. And above all — the bison. Gone. Brought back. Home, for the first time in Romania’s history.”

Recently, we witnessed yet another historic moment: four moose specimens — one male and three females — were brought to Vânători-Neamț Natural Park from Germany, France, and Switzerland. After a month in quarantine, the animals will have access to 180 hectares of land, and tourists will be able to observe them from a distance.

The moose were carefully selected to adapt to their new habitat in the forests of Neamț County, and their introduction is part of a project aimed at restoring natural balance and diversifying wild fauna.

Researchers are also delighted to study their role directly within the ecosystem and state that the moose is both an indicator of environmental health and an ecosystem engineer, contributing to the balance of wetlands and forest clearings.

Today, the moose — which can reach a height of two meters and weigh over 500 kilograms — is found only in the forests of Northern Europe, Siberia, and Alaska.

What Else Does This Natural Park Represent?

It represents an area of 26,000 hectares of forests where more than a quarter of Romania’s plant species find shelter, alongside 41 species of mammals, 103 species of birds, and seven species of fish.

Within this idyllic landscape of seemingly endless forests, a chain of monasteries and hermitages is scattered throughout the land, home to around one thousand monks and nuns. Thus, the monastic villages of Văratec and Agapia together form the largest Orthodox monastic settlement in the world.

For hundreds of years, the presence of monastic communities in these places has also meant a unique interaction with the surrounding landscape and a model for its preservation — an economy dedicated to the needs of the community, a model of sustainable and resilient living.

For all this and much more built by the local community, the Romsilva – Vânători-Neamț Natural Park area — this living heritage of nature, culture, and spirituality — was recently included on the UNESCO list.

Also recently, the Land of the Bison reached the podium at the Destination of the Year 2026 Gala, in the category Best Promotion, marking yet another remarkable recognition.
