through-cheile-sugaului-to-pestera-tunel“Pestera Tunel” (The Tunnel Cave) is located in Cheile Sugaului – Munticelu Nature Reserve and crosses the mighty ridge “Piatra Glodului” (The Mud Stone). Also called by locals “Pestera Sura Glodului” (The Mud Burn’s Cave) the cave it’s like a tunnel carved into the massive stone wall by nature. Huge boulders were dislocated by a natural cataclysm and shaped this impressive passing through the stone wall.

The trail to “Pestera Tunel” (The Tunnel Cave) starts at the entrance in Cheile Bicazului, on the right, where Cheile Sugaului – Munticelu Reservation starts. The trail goes up to Ecolog Chalet and continues to climb with Piatra Glodului Stone Wall on the right. As you go higher the scenery becomes wild and spectacular: the rocks with strange shapes and impressive proportions guard the trail on both sides. In the upper part of the trail you start to see the crack in Piatra Glodului stone wall: the place where the entrance in “Pestera Tunel” (The Tunnel Cave) is located.

The entrance to the cave is guarded by big boulders that you’ll climb like steps. Right at the entrance you’ll feel the cold air that’s coming from inside the cave. The light fades quickly because of the narrow entrance. After few meters you’ll see the light that indicates the exit to the other side. Inside the cave, you’ll see big fallen boulders as a testimonial of the initial event that created the cave. Because of the short length of the cave the light doesn’t fades away completely so you don’t need extra light sources to cross it.

When you’ll exit “Pestera Tunel” (The Tunnel Cave) you’ll be welcomed by the strong sense of Pine trees and the warm sun rays. The trail continues to climb, above the cave until you reach a panoramic point from the top of “Piatra Glodului” Stone: from here you’ll have a great view over Cheile Bicazului. After that, the trail descents through the forest and reaches “Pestera Munticelu” (Munticelu Cave).
